Stomach Bloating

Stomach Bloating

Stomach bloating is when your belly feels swollen after eating. Stomach bloating can make you feel really uncomfortable making  your belly look fat and can even make your abs that you worked so hard for to disappear.

It’s mainly caused by gas in your stomach as a result of poor digestion (an excessive build-up of gas in the intestine) as it produces a more unstable microbial community in the gut.

This can mean you have problems in your digestive system, leading to poor breakdown of the food you eat.

Possible reasons

  • Carbohydrates
  • Carbs give your body fuel and it can be used quickly. But too many at once can make you retain water. And the faster the carbs get into your blood, the more likely that is.

  • Dairy
  • Foods like milk and ice cream can cause gas, belly pain, and bloating if your body can’t easily digest a dairy sugar called lactose.

  • Constipation
  • Too little fiber, fluids, and physical activity can lead to constipation, which can result in bloating.

  • Eating too fast and too much
  • Eating too fast and too much – gulping too much food or drink makes us take in a lot of air along with the food which could lead to gas.

    Ways to prevent

  • Avoid foods that trigger gas
  • Drinking lots of water could help balance your system
  • Eat and drink slowly as there is a direct correlation between chewing food and digestive health.
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle and try to eat healthy as well
  • Try a Low-FODMAP Diet
  • FODMAP stands for fermentable oligo-, di-, mono-saccharides and polyols, which are short chain carbohydrates and sugar alcohols that are poorly digested by the body. Small intestine doesn’t always fully absorb these carbohydrates. They ferment in the large intestine (bowel) during digestion, drawing in water and producing carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and methane gas that causes the intestine to expand.
